Student Allergies and Food Restrictions
Safety is always crucial while in the care of the children. This is especially important during meal times when a child has allergies and food intolerances. It is also important to respect household and cultural practices of restricted foods. Children with allergies/restrictions are posted in the lunchroom, main pantry, and on the kitchen refrigerator. This information is also included on their ID cards, emergency sheets in every binder, and their main child file in the Director office. If there is ever a question about a meal or one of its components, lean towards caution and substitute it until it can be cleared by Administration. When plating food at meal times, children with alternate milk will be given a different-colored cup (typically amber), and if any foods are substituted, they will have a different-colored plate (typically sky blue).
Allergic or restricted foods should never be used with affected children during non-meal times (such as crafts). If a child has been exposed to a restricted item, immediately remove them from contact (including washing their hands/face), administer emergency medications if applicable, and contact Administration to notify parents and take necessary next steps. If a reaction occurs, follow Emergency Procedures.
