Food In Classroom Policy
Purpose
This policy exists to:
- Protect a sense of fairness and emotional safety for children, who can feel hurt or distracted when adults eat in front of them or when some children appear to receive “extra” food and others do not.
- Maintain a clean, healthy classroom environment and reduce pest and allergy risks from food in learning spaces.
- Reduce liability related to food exposure in the classroom.
- Support positive, conflict-free relationships among staff by setting clear expectations for when and where staff may eat.
Our goal is to create clarity, not to be punitive. This policy is meant to empower staff to make good decisions and to support a professional, child-centered environment.
Scope
This policy applies to:
- All employees, substitutes, assistants, volunteers, and any other adults who are in **direct care of children in a classroom**
- During any time that **children are present** in that classroom
When children are not present, staff may follow the guidelines in the “Meal and Break Locations” section.
General Principle
While in direct care of children in the classroom, staff **do not eat food**. Food is eaten during **designated meal times or break times**, in appropriate locations, except in cases of medical necessity.
Food in Classrooms
When children are present in the classroom:
- Staff **may not eat meals, snacks, fast food, leftovers, or delivery food** (e.g., DoorDash, UberEats, etc.).
- Staff **should not open or consume** any personal food items in front of children, except as outlined in the “Medical Needs” section.
- Staff should avoid setting out personal food where children can see or access it.
- Concerns about hunger, energy, or scheduling should be addressed through the center’s break and scheduling procedures, not by eating in the classroom.
Drinks in Classrooms
When children are present in the classroom:
- Staff **may have drinks** (e.g., water, coffee, tea, etc.).
- Staff are expected to use common sense to keep drinks stored and consumed in a way that is safe and minimally distracting to children.
Gum and mints are permitted for staff, provided they are used discreetly and kept out of children’s reach.
Medical Needs
We recognize that some staff have legitimate medical needs that require food at specific times (for example, blood sugar management).
- Staff with a medical need **may eat in the classroom as needed**, even when children are present.
- A doctor’s note is **not required**; however, staff are encouraged to communicate with their supervisor so that needs and accommodations are clearly understood and supported.
- Whenever possible, staff should eat medically necessary food in a **discreet** manner that minimizes distraction for children and preserves a sense of fairness in the classroom.
Meal and Break Locations
Staff are encouraged to take full advantage of their scheduled meal and break times. During breaks and meal periods, staff may eat:
- In the staff break room
- In an empty classroom or other approved room where no children are present
- In another approved space designated by leadership
Food should be consumed during these times and in these locations, not while actively responsible for children.
For more detail on how and when breaks are provided, see the center’s Break and Rest Periods Policy and related scheduling procedures.
Deliveries and Outside Food Services
Food deliveries (such as DoorDash, UberEats, Grubhub, etc.) are allowed **with the following expectations**:
- Staff may order delivery food to the center, but it must be **received and eaten during a scheduled break or meal time**, not during active classroom supervision.
- It is **not appropriate** to step out of the classroom and leave children (even briefly) in order to receive a delivery. Staff should coordinate delivery timing with their scheduled break or with another appropriate arrangement approved by leadership.
- Delivered food should **not be opened or eaten in the classroom** while children are present.
Modeling Professionalism and Care
As educators and caregivers, staff model behavior for children. By eating only during designated meal and break times and avoiding food consumption in front of children, staff help:
- Create a sense of fairness for all children
- Maintain a calm, focused classroom environment
- Demonstrate healthy boundaries between work time and personal time
All staff members share responsibility for gently upholding this policy. Any staff member may kindly remind another of these expectations or seek support from leadership if they are unsure how to handle a situation.
This policy is intended to support staff well-being and children’s experience together. Questions, concerns, or suggestions for improvement are always welcome and can be directed to your supervisor or program director.
