If the students become too loud or rowdy, blink the lights in the room to draw their attention back to the task at hand. You may also utilize counting down from 5 to redirect the class collectively. Raising our voices should be used as a last resort. Students who are being disruptive or uncooperative will receive “minutes on the carpet” as time out during the next free play in Centers. It is important to talk to them about why they received minutes and how to avoid them in the future at the end of their time. Staff can ask the children to have “bubbles” if they need to be silent (holding a bubble in their mouths), and to have “shark fins” (hands above their head together in a point) to keep their hands to themselves. This is especially during transitions and lining up.
