Food During Classroom Shifts

From Team Wiki

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to create a fair, professional, and safe classroom environment by setting clear expectations around staff eating while caring for children. Limiting food consumption in the classroom helps:

  • Reduce feelings of inequity when children see adults eating food they cannot have.
  • Minimize conflict between staff related to outside food and meal orders.
  • Support cleanliness and reduce pests or spills.
  • Limit liability related to food allergies and other health concerns.
  • Promote professionalism and healthy modeling for children by eating during designated meal and break times.

Teachers and staff are expected to model healthy habits and professionalism by eating during designated meal and break times only.

Scope

This policy applies to all staff members (teachers, assistants, floaters, volunteers, and any other adults) who are in direct care of children in a classroom while children are present.

General Policy

When children are present in the classroom, staff may not eat personal food, including but not limited to:

  • Snacks (chips, candy, pastries, etc.).
  • Takeout or delivery food (e.g., DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub).
  • Leftovers brought from home.
  • Full meals of any kind.

Food is to be eaten:

  • During scheduled staff breaks in the designated break room or another approved non-classroom space.
  • During staff meal times as defined in the Break and Meal Policy.
  • During program-approved classroom meal or snack times provided for children, following existing meal service guidelines (not as personal staff meal time).

Gum and mints are permitted for staff and do not fall under this restriction as long as they do not create a disruption or safety concern.

Nonalcoholic drinks are permitted in the classroom while staff are supervising children, provided they are used responsibly to avoid spills and distractions.

Medical Exceptions

We recognize that some staff may have medical needs that occasionally require food intake outside of scheduled break or meal times.

  • Staff with medically relevant needs may keep small, appropriate food items accessible (for example, for blood sugar management).
  • These items may be eaten while supervising children if medically necessary.
  • Staff are encouraged to be as discreet as reasonably possible to reduce confusion or feelings of unfairness among children.
  • No doctor’s note is required; staff should, however, communicate ongoing medical needs to their supervisor so that appropriate support and coverage can be arranged when needed.

In urgent situations (e.g., sudden dizziness, low blood sugar), staff may take a quick, necessary bite of a medically relevant snack or step out briefly if coverage is available, consistent with all safety and ratio policies.

Outside Food Orders (DoorDash and Similar Services)

Staff may place food delivery orders (e.g., DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, etc.) under the following conditions:

  • Food from deliveries must not be opened or eaten in the classroom while children are present.
  • Staff should time deliveries so that orders arrive during their scheduled break or meal time.
  • It is inappropriate to step out of the classroom to receive a delivery while responsible for children. Coverage must be arranged through normal procedures if a staff member needs to step away for any reason.
  • Staff are encouraged to coordinate group orders, when desired, in a way that supports team unity and occurs on break times, not during active classroom supervision.

All outside food brought in for staff use remains subject to this policy and the broader meal service and allergy policies.

Equity, Cleanliness, and Liability

To protect children and staff:

  • Staff should avoid eating in ways that highlight differences between what adults can have and what children are allowed to have, in order to reduce feelings of unfairness.
  • Food consumption in non-designated times and places can contribute to pests, spills, and sanitation issues and is therefore discouraged outside meal/break times.
  • Staff must remain mindful that outside food can introduce untracked allergens into the classroom environment.

These expectations are intended to promote a fair, predictable, and safe environment for all students and staff.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • All classroom staff are responsible for following this policy and planning their meals and snacks around scheduled breaks and meal times.
  • Any staff member may gently remind another staff member of this policy if they observe eating in the classroom during non-designated times.
  • Lead teachers, supervisors, and administrators are responsible for coaching, clarifying expectations, and helping staff problem-solve if they are struggling to manage food needs within the policy.

This is a coaching-oriented policy. The goal is to support staff and maintain a healthy environment, not to punish. Concerns will typically be addressed through conversation, reminders, and collaborative problem-solving.

Communication

This policy should be:

  • Reviewed with all new hires during orientation.
  • Discussed in staff meetings as needed, especially when questions or patterns arise.
  • Available in written form on the staff wiki and linked alongside the Break and Meal Policy and meal service guidelines.

Questions or concerns about how to apply this policy in specific situations should be directed to a supervisor or administrator.
