Submitting a Hardware Report (Windows)

This guide will help you collect essential hardware information from your Windows computer and submit it to IT.

Step 1: Download the Script

Important: Do NOT left-click the link. Please follow these instructions:

1. Right-click this link: Download PowerShell Script
2. From the menu that appears, select Save link as... or Save target as...
3. When prompted where to save, choose your C:\ drive (the main hard drive).
4. The file should be saved as C:\Generate-SystemReport.ps1

Right-click the link and select "Save link as..." or "Save target as..."

Note: You might get a warning or error about an insecure download (for example: "This file is not commonly downloaded" or "This type of file can harm your computer"). This is expected.

Click Keep, Allow, or whatever option your browser gives to continue the download.

Step 2: Open PowerShell

1. Press the Windows key.
2. Type powershell.
3. Right-click Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.

 (If you do not have administrator rights, right-click and select Open.)

Step 3: Allow Script Execution (Temporarily)

1. Copy and paste the following command into PowerShell, then press Enter:

Set-ExecutionPolicy -Scope Process -ExecutionPolicy Bypass

1. This command allows PowerShell scripts to run only for this session (it will reset when you close PowerShell).

Step 4: Run the Script

1. In the PowerShell window, navigate to the folder where you saved the script:

1. If you saved the file on your Desktop, type:

cd $HOME\Desktop

1. If you saved it in your Downloads folder, type:

cd $HOME\Downloads

1. Now, run the script by typing:

.\Generate-SystemReport.ps1

Step 5: Complete the Prompts

• The script will ask you to describe the machine (example: Jane's Laptop or Youth Room Dell).
• The script will ask if there are any known issues (type a brief description or leave blank).
• The script will collect your system info and automatically submit it to IT.

Note:

• This process does not make any changes to your system.
• If you see a security warning, you may safely choose to run the script.
• After running, you may close PowerShell as normal.
