While we make every effort to avoid an issue of contamination and/or a child being served a restricted food, there are times it can still happen. If a child has been served a restricted or allergic food, please follow the procedure below:

# Remove the food and have the child wash their hands (or whatever body area exposed) and rinse out their mouth (if the ingredient was eaten).
# Assess if the child is experiencing any emergent reaction. Use their Epipen or other emergency medicine if prescribed and they are showing any symptoms.
## These include: feeling dizzy or lightheaded; itchy skin or a raised rash (hives); swelling of the lips, face and eyes; coughing; wheezing, breathlessness; noisy breathing or a hoarse voice
## Other symptoms of a reaction: sneezing or an itchy, runny or blocked nose; feeling nauseous and/or vomiting; stomach pain, diahrrea
# If no emergent reaction is observed, take the time to look in their Brightwheel profile regarding the nature of the allergy or restriction.
# If it is only a restriction, call the family to make them aware, and that the child is doing well (if they are). If the child is experiencing stomach upset, etc. determine with the parent/guardian should pick them up early.
# If it is an allergy and there are no emergency medicines, and there are no symptoms present, call the parent/guardian to make them aware and advise on what they feel should be done (early pickup, call if they vomit, etc.). If emergent symptoms begin, call 911.
# Document in Brightwheel what happened, the child's reaction (or that they did not have one), any interventions, and that family was notified.
